Right after “which size?”, this is the question we get most: how long should I keep them on, and can I use them every day? The short answer: 20 to 30 minutes per session is a good start for most athletes, and daily use is fine. Below we explain why, and when to do it differently.
How long per session?
In research on air compression for athletes, sessions range from 15 to 60 minutes. The most common protocol is 20 to 30 minutes. That matches what we see in practice: shorter often feels just too short, and after half an hour most people notice little extra.
Just starting out? Keep your first sessions to 15 or 20 minutes and build up from there. That way you learn how your legs respond before you sit in them for longer.
How often?
You can use the boots every day. Many athletes use them after hard sessions and races and skip them on easy days. If you train almost daily, it soon becomes a fixed moment: shower, eat, legs in.
Twice a day works too, for example during a tournament with several matches or a training camp. Leave a few hours between sessions.
When after training?
The easiest moment is within a few hours of training, when you are sitting on the sofa or in the changing room anyway. Some athletes use a short, light session before a race to loosen up their legs. If you do, keep the pressure low and never try it for the first time on race day.
What you will notice, and what you will not
Most people mainly notice that their legs feel less heavy and stiff. That is in line with the research: the clearest effect is on muscle soreness and on how recovered you feel. Compression boots will not make you faster or stronger, and they do not replace sleep, good food or a rest day. See them as a pleasant addition to your recovery, not the foundation of it.
When not to use them
Do not use the boots if you have thrombosis, a fracture, open wounds or cardiovascular disease, and check with your GP or physio first if you are unsure. Always wear long leggings or tights in the boots. If it hurts, tingles or your feet go cold, lower the pressure or stop the session.
In short
- Start with 15 to 20 minutes and build up to 20 to 30 minutes
- Daily use is fine, especially after hard sessions
- Pick a moment you can keep up
- Pain or tingling means: lower the pressure
